What makes a tradition?
Some of my friends have turkey for special occasions and my family has tamales.
Every family has their own traditions. Some are big and some are small, sometimes we don’t even think they are “tradition”. We even have some traditions in our classroom. Let’s think about your family’s traditions and even our classroom traditions:
1. What are some of our classroom traditions?
2.
Do you have special traditions in your family? If so, which family tradition is your favorite?
3.
When you think of your favorite tradition, is there special food that your family makes? What kind of food? Is there special music that your family listens to? What does it sound like?
4.
Does your family dress differently if you are celebrating something? If they do, what do they wear that is different?
5.
Are there some traditions that your family celebrates that your friends do not? Are there some traditions that your friends celebrate that you don’t?
6.
Why are traditions important?
7.
Why is your tradition(s) special to you?
Act A
Share stories about your favorite activity, holiday or tradition: what you eat, what you wear, what you do, and what makes them so special to you.
Act B
Find something in the house you live that is used during a special activity, family holiday or tradition. Ask an adult to help if necessary. Bring it to school or share a picture with the group telling them what it is used for
*Teacher’s note: Share a small tradition from your own life as an example, and bring something to show for it
